No Customer Left BehindE-mail can prove to be a very effective marketing tool, if used wisely. Email marketing can assist your business by keeping your name in front of your current customers. As an owner of a business you may not have the ability to hire a sales force that shows up at your customer’s shop each week, ready to take in orders, however, you can have an email that shows up now and again to provide your customers the special sales for the month or to thank them for their patronage to your company. When keeping in touch with your customers it is important to write a familiar subject line. This way, they know you are not one of the many junk emails they get. They should recognize your emails as business correspondence and not just marketing. When writing your email, no matter if it is a newsletter to all of your customers or simply an email to a specific customer makes sure to keep it informative and light. No one wants bad news through an email, but in addition to that they don’t want an overload of personal information. It is perfectly appropriate to mention something they have brought up, such as their golf swing or their recent vacation but know when enough is enough. This is a business relationship, and it should be treated with professionalism and respect. Use your business email lists wisely, do not under utilize your email list or over utilize your list. A customer you do not keep in touch with is not your customer any more. They speak to other sales people and other companies who care enough to stay in touch. A simple email to say you would like to call on them and is Friday a good day, or that you have time to chat about their account and how you might be able to save them money, is a great way to stay in touch. You can send regular updates to all your customers, however if the emails are being rejected you must take the time to call the customer and ask if they have changed their email address. This gives you a great opportunity to speak to the customer and again, remind them how you can help them through your products or services. When keeping in touch through email to customers sometimes people begin to treat the correspondence quite informally. They speak in less than full sentences, they do not put their contact information in their signature line and they even forget using an appropriate salutation, such as Dear: or Greetings:. These examples are very prevalent and also a sure giveaway to your email recipient that you have no idea about business communication. When each letter had to be typed and mailed, we would never think to write so poorly, but the internet has given rise to bad writing habits. Before you send out your email, have someone else look at it and read it, and critique it. Before you know it, you will be back in the habit of using email as a professional correspondence and as a valuable sales tool.
