Email Marketing - It’s All About the List

It may seem obvious but we’re going to say it anyway… the most important part of any email marketing campaign is the mailing list. For our purposes we will assume that you have already built a reasonably good list. You are using the double opt-in technique to ensure that your subscribers really want to be on the list. You are requiring a reasonable level of information from your subscribers so that you can segment your list and conduct properly targeted campaigns that have a high level of personalization. You have- and you inform your subscribers about- privacy policies that protect misuse of their information.

After all that, how do you nurture and grow your list and improve the effectiveness of your email marketing program? There are a variety of techniques- online as well as offline- that can increase the volume of your list while retaining its quality. First, consider steps to optimize your web site to gather new subscribers. Don’t limit your subscription form to your home page. The form, or some simplified version of it, should find a place on each page of your site. Then work on the SEO qualities of your site.

Consider a good PPC program that will direct high quality traffic to your site. When you drive more high quality traffic to your site, that is itself optimized to maximize subscriber participation, you are two giant steps in the direction of increasing the size- and maintaining the quality- of your list. There are effective offline strategies for collecting email addresses, too. Promote your site in innovative posters, brochures, business cards, and presentation materials. Consider a low cost post card campaign that tastefully informs people and asks them to subscribe to your email program for information and opportunities. Leverage memberships in trade associations and business networks. Use their membership lists and make them your own. Attend some functions, distribute your materials and get the word out about your business, your site, and the value of subscribing to your email program.
