Is ‘List Building’ One Of The Money Making Ideas That Work? When most savvy people talk about money making ideas that work, they mention list building. Or say something along the line: ‘the money is on the list’. Is this true? Q: I’ve heard gurus talking about their list as a ‘cash cow’. Is that so? A: Yes, I’ve heard those people, too, but to be honest, I un-subscribe from their mailing lists. Since I’m one of their subscribers — or were — it means that they look at me as an ATM machine more than a human being. A list is not a cash cow. A list consists of living beings who have chosen to give up their name and email address in exchange for a product. If you choose to address these people as machines, or daft beings on their way to the slaughter bench (your sales page), you might make some money, but sooner or later, these people will realise that they mean nothing to you. You’re not there to help them, but to drain them from their resources. And then you’ll lose them for good. Q: How should I address my list, then? A: When I started to build my first list back in 2003, I asked nine of my friends to join. So I knew these people. I knew whom I talked to in my letters. After a while, the list grew, and when I reached 100 subscribers, I panicked a bit and got afraid of writing to them. All those strangers… When I regained control of myself, I chose to write to one person only. I made up my ‘ideal reader’, as Stephen King calls him. And this was the person I wrote to week after week. I told this person about some things that happened in my life, I gave him tips and tricks, and I related to him. What really surprised me was that I got lots of personal letters back from people, who all felt that I wrote directly to them, and to them alone. Q: How do I make my list buy from me? A: You don’t. However, you can present them for relevant offers, and if you relate to them, and they trust you, they will purchase from you, if the offer can be any help to them. Q: How often should I write to my list? A: Often enough. Yes, that’s a vague answer, but it depends on the purpose of your list. For two of my lists, I send two emails per week, on a normal basis. One email contains helpful content, like tips, tricks, or something like that. And another email contains a promotion for a product, or just an advert to click. This email is purely commercial, but I always put it up in my own words. Actually, I’m convinced that you can learn a lot from my own experience. I started out in a foreign country, not knowing the language and, just by working two hours per day on one specific domain, I designed a home page that earns me well over $1,000 per month on autopilot.
