The 3 Cornerstones of Email Marketing Success - How to Avoid Having a Zombie List

Email marketing is something that every marketer or business should be doing if they want to take their profits to the next level. There’s no faster, more cost-efficient way to reach your customers or clients than through email. The money isn’t in the list though - it’s in the quality of the list. You can call it whatever you like - the quality of the list, the relationship you have with your list, your conversions, a numbers game - it all comes down to how many people open your emails and how many of those people take the desired action after reading them.

With that said, there are basically 3 cornerstones to email marketing success.  If you make them the foundation of your email marketing campaign, you will have loyal list of followers until the end of time.  Miss just one and your email list will resemble a land of zombies — a lot of grumbling, moaning, and at the end of the day, they’ll act like the walking dead that you’ve created.

Consistency

People will be opting into your list for a reason. This could be because they bought something from you, or maybe they wanted to learn more about something, or possibly they opted in for a free gift. Your job is to remember what you promised and stay relevant to your subscribers’ needs. Do not cross promote between niches unless it is appropriate. For instance, do not promote forex products to your network marketing list unless your subscribers specifically ask for it (which is highly unlikely).

Another way to stay consistent is to mail your subscribers at regular intervals. Don’t email them ten times in a week and then disappear for the next two weeks. In this way, it is similar to blogging.  The idea behind stay consistent is to train your subscribers to know what to expect from you. If you want to email once a week, then do that. Each week, on whatever day you choose to send your broadcasts, your subscribers will be expecting your email, and this will boost your open rates. Don’t have qualms about emailing your list more often - just make sure you train your subscribers to expect more frequent mailings. Emailing your list daily isn’t bad if your subscribers feel like they’re getting value from you.

Detail the purpose of your newsletter

I use the term “newsletter” loosely - that’s just what I’m calling your email list - your emails don’t necessarily have to come in a newsletter format, nor do they have to provide news. Nowadays, people are getting more and more disillusioned about submitting their names and emails because they’ve grown to have low expectations. This is a phenomenon, which, to my knowledge, only exists in money-related niches. People are sick of getting piles of promotional emails which contain little value.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t send promotional emails. What I would advise doing would be to make it your intentions clear on your squeeze page, or wherever you’re capturing leads. As in, if you’re starting a newsletter which provides tips, state that, and stick to providing tips. If you want to grow a list of buyers, make it clear that you’ll be selling them promotional emails.  There’s nothing wrong with selling stuff to people who want tips or giving tips to people who want to buy, but separating these two types of people and giving them what they want will cause your open rates and conversions to skyrocket.

Never put YOUR needs first — not even once

In the end, it’s really just a matter of delivering on your promises.  Give the people on your list what they want and what they signed up for.  Treat them like friends, not like “prospects”.  If you stray from this just once — one blatant promotion that has nothing to do with the needs of your list members and everything to do with making you some money at the end of the month — you can lose your list forever.  It’s all about providing valuable information to your new “friends’ and respecting their needs.  This, more than anything will result in a group of dedicated followers who will trust you to lead them forward.
